Thousands turn out to celebrate Dragon Boat Race and Taiwan Day Festival in Pawtucket Rhode Island, September 11.

Thousands of people from communities across Rhode Island and surrounding states turned out for the 6th Annual Dragon Boat Race and Taiwan Day Festival held in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on September 11, 2004 for a day long celebration of dragon boat races and Taiwanese culture.

The Dragon Boat Race and Taiwan Day Festival got off to a great start with welcoming remarks by Mayor James Doyle who announced that the City of Pawtucket will make Dr. C.K. Liu of TECO-Boston an honorary citizen of the City in recognition of his contribution to bring the six new dragon boats from Taiwan this year. Similarly, Congressman Patrick Kennedy also spoke highly about Dr. Liu along this line.

Other distinguished guests present at the opening ceremony included RI Lieutenant Governor Charles Fogarty, Attorney General Patrick Lynch, and Providence Mayor David Cicilline. All wished the event great success and stressed friendly relations between Taiwan and Rhode Island.
