Kuo-tung Yang with Joint Resolution Endorsing Taiwan's Participation
in World Health Organization, April 14, 2008
On April 14, 2008, the Maine House of Representatives
and Senate issued a Joint Resolution ˇuEndorsing Taiwan's Participation
on the World Heath Organization.ˇv The Resolution points out, in
sum, that: Whereas, good health is essential to every citizen of
the world, and access to health information and services of the
highest standard is necessary to improve public health; and Whereas
the World Health Organization set forth in the first chapter of
its charter the objective of attaining the highest possible level
of health for all persons; and Whereas the United States Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention and its Taiwanese counterpart
agencies have enjoyed close collaboration on a wide range of public
health issues and in recent years Taiwan has expressed a willingness
to assist financially and technically in international health activities
supported by the World Health Organization; and Whereas, the European
Parliament and the United States House of Representatives and Senate
have expressed support for Taiwan's observer status in the World
Health OrganizationˇKTherefore, be it Resolved that the Members of
the One Hundred Twenty-third Legislature support Taiwan's effort
to gain observer status at the World Health Organization.
TECO-Boston Director General and Mrs. Kuo-tung Yang called upon
Senate President Beth Edmonds and House Speaker Glenn Cummings during
a visit to Maine on May 7. He expressed appreciation for the House
and Senate friendship and support of Taiwan. Senator Peggy Rotundo
and Representative John Brautigam presented Director General Yang
with the Resolution.
