Dr. Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Chairman of the Mainland
Affairs Council spoke at the Harvard Fairbank Center for East Asian
Research on July 16 before a packed seminar room of Harvard scholars,
students and guests on peace and stability for cross-Strait relations.
Chairman Wu spoke on the military balance
across the Strait and the need to bolster Taiwan' s defense capabilities
in view of the Mainland' s military buildup, including its air force,
navy, rapid development forces, space technology and more than 500
ballistic missiles targeting Taiwan. On the diplomatic front, Chairman
Wu provided examples of how the PRC has tried to isolate Taiwan
from the international community such as interfering in Taiwan'
s formal diplomatic relations with countries around the world. Next,
he updated the audience on the development of Taiwan's democracy,
and assured the group that Taiwan does not intent any unilateral
action to upset the status quo, to change the name of the Republic
of China or flag. The fourth part of his talk focused on the current
trend of exchanges between Taiwan and the Mainland, including a
sizable trade. Lastly, he highlighted Taiwan' s cross-Strait policies
after May 20 to develop confidence building measures, ease tensions
and ensure Taiwan' s security. In sum, the Chairman assured listeners
that Taiwan seeks goodwill and reconciliation, rigorous cooperation
and permanent peace.
