Faculty Development and Teaching Effectiveness: American Experiences and Implications for Taiwan's Higher Education. Jun 30, 2004 Faculty Development and Teaching Effectiveness: American Experiences and Implications for Taiwan's Higher Education On June 21-22, 2004, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston sponsored a forum on teaching effectiveness and faculty development. The forum was co-sponsored by The Teaching and Learning Laboratory of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), The Center for the Improvement of Teaching at the University of Massachusetts Boston and The Center for Teaching at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. With the increasing number of higher education institutions and rising student enrollment, quality assurance has become a major focus within Taiwan's higher education reform. The Ministry of Education (MOE) in Taiwan has taken several steps to engage this issue. One of the major efforts taken has been to provide funds for universities to initiate various projects to improve teaching effectiveness. This seminar introduced the wealth of US experience in faculty development and student learning support to Taiwan's higher education institutions. The conference was well attended by Taiwanese scholars, educators and administrators from Tufts University, National Hsin-chu Teacher's College, National Cheng-chi University, National Taitung University, Harvard University, UMass Boston, UMass Amherst, UMass Boston, MIT, New York University, Chao Yang University of Technology, National Taipei Teacher's College and the Ministry of Education. Participants attended presentations and made onsite visits to MIT, UMass Boston and UMass Amherst where they learned about unique aspects of faculty development, teaching with technology and student support from university professors and administrators. The forum concluded with a roundtable discussion in Chinese concerning incentives and challenges to establishing faculty development programs in Taiwan. Those interested in learning more about this
