TECO-Boston facilitates ITRI's innovation forum with MIT Media Lab to promote technical collaborations with Taiwan.

Director-General Kuo-tung Yang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston) welcomed a delegation from Taiwan led by Dr. Johnsee Lee, President of Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), at the ITRI and MIT Media Lab Breakfast Forum held on June 22, 2005 at the Boston Marriott Cambridge, Cambridge MA. This high-tech forum, organized by TECO-Boston and ITRI, successfully focused attention on the theme of leveraging Taiwan's advantages for global competitiveness and drew more than 60 people from business, academia, and media.

Dr. Lee spoke on Taiwan's development of cutting-edge technological advancements and innovation as critical components towards global competitiveness. Mr. Walter Bender, Executive Director of MIT Media Lab, addressed the issue of Inventions and Innovations and its different collaboration model with ITRI. Based on the collaboration between ITRI and the MIT Media Lab, both organizations will be able to combine research and development strengths, share resources and exchange the results of their innovations.

Through the forum, participating companies and academia commented on the impressive development of Taiwan and expressed their interest in collaborative opportunities with Taiwan. The Boston Globe, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The New York Times company with more than 450,000 viewers, also published the in-depth news story on the cover page of business section titled ¡§MIT Media Lab turns to Taiwan -- and a new approach -- after suffering setbacks with its ventures in India and Ireland¡¨ on June 27, 2005.

During the trip to Boston, Dr. Lee attended a dinner in Cambridge with local business executives and Chinese community leaders and announced ITRI's plans for incubation center establishment and recruitment initiatives in the U.S. It provided opportunities for networking and facilitated closer business relationships between Massachusetts and Taiwan.
