TECO-Boston participates in 25 th Annual Maine International Trade Day, June 16, 2005
Director-General Kuo-tung Yang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston), accompanied by senior commercial officer, Ai-Lan Chen, represented Taiwan trade interests at the 25 th Annual Maine International Trade Day on June 16. This annual event, organized by the Maine International Trade Center and attended by nearly 300 people from the Maine business community, state economic development agencies, and foreign consulates is one of the region's most important and historic events.
During the day TECO-Boston conducted 6 effective one-on-one meetings with Maine companies on a wide range of industries that are highly interested in doing business with Taiwan and investment opportunities in Taiwan. At the trade expo, there were 30 booths mainly for sponsoring organizations. Many companies approached TECO-Boston's booth and expressed their interest in purchasing from and collaborating with businesses in Taiwan. In addition, t he signing of a Free Trade Agreement between the U.S. and Taiwan was strongly encouraged as well as the promotion of tourism in Taiwan. Mr. Richard Coyle, President and State Director of International Trade, also visited TECO-Boston's booth and extended a welcome on behalf of the State of Maine.
Maine International Trade Day awarded former Maine Governor Angus S. King, Jr. who led a trade mission to Taiwan in 1999 with the John W. Bernotavicz Award for his lifelong commitment to international trade development in Maine. IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. with its Asia headquarters in Taiwan received the Exporter of the Year Award. Mr. King and Mr. Jonathan W. Ayers, President of IDEXX Laboratories, both expressed their support to encourage a Maine trade mission to Taiwan.
According to 2004 trade information, Maine exports to Taiwan totaled $12 million USD and major export items include paper, machinery, and computer and electronic products. Taiwan is now the 19 th largest exporting destination to Maine .
