Ambassador Harvey Feldman and Director-General Kuo-tung Yang invited to speak at Pell Center conference at Salve Regina University, Rhode Island,
April 11-12 2005

Ambassador Harvey Feldman and Director-General Kuo-tung Yang of TECO-Boston were invited to speak before the conference ¡§Asia Rising? Emerging Dynamics in the Asia-Pacific Rim¡¨ held at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, Salve Regina University, Newport, Rhode Island on April 11-12, 2005.

The conference, cosponsored by The Pell Center and the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs took place over two days in which leading experts and scholars from Taiwan, Russia, United States, England, France, and Australia who are interested in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region met to discuss recent research and exchange views.

Ambassador Feldman noted that Taiwan has evolved from an authoritarian regime into a full democracy. He spoke on a number of issues including cross-Strait relations, China's anti-secession law, Japan's international role and the Six-Party Talks.

Director-General Yang also addressed the issue of the anti-secession law noting that the ROC Government holds the view that Taiwan is an independent, sovereign state and its future will be determined by the 23 million citizens of Taiwan. He further characterized the anti-secession law as an attempt by Beijing to unilaterally change the status quo by authorizing non-peaceful means to resolve cross-Strait issues. ¡§At the very core of my government's policy for cross-Strait relations remains a genuine desire for peace,¡¨ said Mr. Yang.
