Director-General Kuo-tung Yang welcomes Taiwan delegations to 2005 International Seafood Show in Boston. March 14, 2005

Director-General Kuo-Tung Yang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, accompanied by Senior Commercial Officer, Ai-Lan Chen, visited the 23 rd Annual International Boston Seafood Show and greeted Taiwanese exhibitors on March 14, 2005. It is the 8 th year that the Taiwan Frozen Seafood Association organized the Taiwan Delegation to attend the show which was held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. The number of Taiwanese exhibitors has increased over the years. This year, the Taiwan delegation was comprised of 10 companies represented by 40 people. The theme of this year's exhibition was ˇ§Taiwan Tilapia.ˇ¨

Attended by more than 80 countries, the International Boston Seafood Show touched on every aspect of the seafood industry. It is the largest seafood show in North America and the second largest in the world. There were over 800 participating seafood and seafood-related businesses and 1,600 display booths. For the first time, the Imports & Exports Association of Taipei led the Taiwan Buyers' Mission of 12 people to attend the show.

Director-General Yang hosted a welcome dinner banquet for both delegation members from Taiwan. Mr. Robert Ward, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Office of International Trade and Investment represented Governor Mitt Romney and Lt. Governor Kerry Healey to welcome the Taiwan delegations. Local business executives and Chinese community leaders were also invited. It provided opportunities for networking and generating closer business relationships between Massachusetts and Taiwan.

According to 2004 fishery products trade information, Taiwan exports to the US accounted for 11.7% of its total fishery exports of $1.58 billion USD- an increase of 10% over 2003. The US is the 2 nd largest market for Taiwan fishery product exports. In 2004, Taiwan's trade surplus with the US totaled $162 million USD.

In 2004, exports to Taiwan from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine exceeded $1.5 billion USD. Massachusetts exports to Taiwan have grown by a substantial 80% to a total of $951 million USD. Taiwan now ranks as the 6 th largest export destination for Massachusetts, next only to Japan among Asian countries.
